Item #14– McLaughlin Garden signature shade plant collection
Valued at $100
Our collection of 8 classic McLaughlin Garden shade perennials consists of three ground covers: 1. European ginger (Asarum europaenum), the drought tolerant woodlander 2.Thunderbolt fairy wings (Epimedium pinnatum ssp. colchicum’Thunderbolt’), and 3.Sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum).
A shade collection from McLaughlin wouldn’t be the same without a Hosta so we’ve chosen the unusual 4. Hosta ‘Abiqua Drinking Gourd’. This beauty has powder blue leaves of great substance which are cardboard-like, and deeply-cupped. In early summer Hosta ‘Abiqua Drinking Gourd’ is topped with white flowers.
We’ve added the self- seeding 5.Asian twinleaf (Jeffersonia dubia) whose cupped, up-facing, blue-lavender flowers bloom reliably to welcome spring.
We’ve also included the classic 6. Solomon’s seal (Polygonatum x hybridum) and a McLaughlin favorite, the stately 7. Yellow Wax bells (Kirengeshoma palmata). Yellow Wax bells produce pendulous soft yellow waxy bell shaped flowers clasped by brown calyxes and bloom in late summer.
Rounding out the collection is one of our most beloved ferns at The McLaughlin Garden, the 8. Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides). This native fern is found throughout Western Maine and is easy to grow, thrives in deep shade, and, as an added bonus is deer resistant.
Planted all together in one bed or spread out around your yard, we know you’ll enjoy the texture, color and all around beauty of this versatile shade plant collection.
